Malkin Scores In His Return, Luke Scores Lone Goal In 4-1 Loss

Photo: Andrew MacLean The Devils took on the Penguins at PPG Paints Arena on Thursday, January 8th, where they were defeated 4-1, taking their third straight loss. The New Jersey team has been struggling lately, with one of their recent games ending in a 9-0 loss against the New York Islanders. Luke Hughes scored the lone goal for the Devils, preventing a shutout for Stuart Skinner while giving the team something to build on. For the Penguins, this is their sixth straight win. In his return after missing 15 games, Evgeni Malkin scored for Pittsburgh in their 4-1 victory. Erik Karlsson, Connor Dewar, and Blake Lizotte also scored for the Penguins. The Devils head to Winnipeg on Sunday to take on the Jets to hopefully make a comeback, while the Penguins host the Calgary Flames on Saturday, looking to extend their streak to seven. New Jersey Devils star Jack Hughes is back!

Devils' star Jack Hughes has been out the past 5 games due to a shoulder injury 2 weeks ago on November 3rd. He cut through a pair of defensemen on St. Louis, took a shot on goal, then crashed into the end boards. Hughes made a brief return to the ice, eventually leaving for good.

Unfortunately, the Devils lost against St. Louis with a 4-1 score.

"It's tough," Curtis Lazar said after their loss in St. Louis. "Look at the start he's had. I'm not going to lie, we were a little dejected when it happened. But, again, you've got to kind of turn the page when you realize he's not coming back."

During this game, the Devils were also without their captain, Nico Hischier, due to an upper-body injury. He's been out of the lineup since October 27th when New Jersey played against the Buffalo Sabres.

"Great second-effort goal around the front of the net," Ruff said. "I thought that goal got us going, and we had a lot of good zone time after that."

Today, November 17th, the Devils announced that Jack Hughes was out on the ice for practice! After 2 weeks of suffering an upper-body injury, the star is back and can hopefully play in tomorrow's game against the New York Rangers.

Hughes will be a game time decision to play tomorrow night.
