Auston Matthews fourth hat trick of the season, Calgary Flames 4-game win streak comes to an end 1/18/14

   Auston Matthews scored a hat trick and had an assist, making sure the Maple Leafs finished the game with a 4-3 win against the Calgary Flames on Thursday, January 18th. Matthews leads the league with four hat tricks this season.

   Yegor Sharangovich scored the first goal of the game, giving Calgary the lead with 9:08 remaining in the first period. Sharangovich has 19 goals this season. Nazem Kadri gave the Flames a two-goal lead with his 16th of the season. Auston Matthews strikes the first goal for the Maple Leafs and makes it a 2-1 game with 1:36 remaining in the first frame.


   Matthews strikes again, tying the game and getting his 36th goal of the season. Mitch Marner put Toronto ahead with a 3-2 score - Marner has 19 goals this season. Auston Matthews completed a hat trick, his fourth of the season. Matthews leads the league with four hat tricks. Andrew Mangiapane made it 4-3 with his 9th goal of the season.


   Connor Zary tied up the game 4-4 - Toronto challenged the goal and it was determined the goal did not count.



Notes:

-  Martin Pospisil did not return for the final period due to an upper-body injury

- The Maple Leafs broke the 4-game win streak the Flames had

- Dan Vladar made 29 saves and Martin Jones made 23 saves

- Auston Matthews leads the league not only with four hat tricks but also with 37 goals



"I thought we did a good job defending and Jones came up with some big saves too - I don't think the first period start was very good. I thought we were a little bit sluggish, and obviously, they come out pretty hot and score two. So I thought just to cut it to one for the second and just get into the locker room, regroup, take a deep breath, and get back out there and play. That's exactly what we did." Auston Matthews met with the media after Toronto's 4-3 victory against the Flames.
