Two Wins Tucked Away: Mercer Powers Devils to Victory Ahead of Home Opener

Photo: Andrew MacLean The New Jersey Devils survived a chaotic, late-game flurry in Columbus to secure their second straight victory on Monday night, defeating the Blue Jackets 3-2 to cap off their opening road trip. The star of the dramatic finish was forward Dawson Mercer, who netted a pair of goals—including the decisive empty-net marker—that momentarily gave the Devils a two-goal cushion before the Blue Jackets scored with 20 seconds left to keep the tension high until the final horn. Having collected four points out of a possible six on the road, New Jersey now turns its focus to the familiar roar of the Prudential Center crowd. The team finally heads home to Newark, where they will open their home slate on Thursday night with a pivotal early-season clash against the formidable Florida Panthers.    Edmonton strikes first - Warren Foegele opens the scoring on the power play with his 10th goal of the season. Dmitri Voronkov tied the game up at 1-1, capitalizing on a Sam Gagner turnover from behind the Oilers' net and passing it out to Kent Johnson in the front for a give-and-go, leaving Stuart Skinner to dive across his crease.

In the middle frame, Connor McDavid thought he got Edmonton a 2-1 lead... the Blue Jackets successfully challenged that the goal by McDavid was offsides. The Blue Jackets and the Oilers stay locked at 1-1.

Evander Kane finds the rebound, giving Edmonton the 2-1 lead this time. Kane found the rebound after Ryan Nugent-Hopkins had hit the post. Connor McDavid made it a 3-1 lead just 55 seconds after Kane's goal. McDavid's shot went over Elvis Merzlikins after he had been knocked into the ice, and the puck went into the net. Dylan Holloway strikes his second of the season, making it a 4-1 lead with four minutes to go.
