Two Wins Tucked Away: Mercer Powers Devils to Victory Ahead of Home Opener

  Photo: Andrew MacLean The New Jersey Devils survived a chaotic, late-game flurry in Columbus to secure their second straight victory on Monday night, defeating the Blue Jackets 3-2 to cap off their opening road trip. The star of the dramatic finish was forward Dawson Mercer, who netted a pair of goals—including the decisive empty-net marker—that momentarily gave the Devils a two-goal cushion before the Blue Jackets scored with 20 seconds left to keep the tension high until the final horn. Having collected four points out of a possible six on the road, New Jersey now turns its focus to the familiar roar of the Prudential Center crowd. The team finally heads home to Newark, where they will open their home slate on Thursday night with a pivotal early-season clash against the formidable Florida Panthers. Panthers 6-2 win over Arizona, 1/24/24

   The Arizona Coyotes played against the Panthers in Florida at the Amerant Bank Arena on Wednesday, January 24th. Sam Reinhart had a goal and an assist, extending his point streak to 11 games.

   Matthew Tkachuk scored the first goal of the game, getting Florida a 1-0 lead early into the first frame. He had won a puck battle with J.J. Moser along the boards, turned, and got the puck past Karel Vejmelka. Sam Reinhart made it a 2-0 score on the power play, on a one-timer from the low slot, passing back and forth with Tkachuk and Aleksander Barkov. Only 17 seconds after Reinhart, Sam Bennett gets one in... beating Vejmelka glove side, a pass from Verhaeghe.


   Matthew Tkachuk strikes another with 15:46 remaining in the middle frame - scoring from the right circle, making it 4-0. Anton Lundell scored a one-timer off a pass from Reinhart, with 1:43 remaining in the period.


   Making it a 6-0 lead for Florida, Jonah Gadjovich scores a backhand in the front early into the final period. Dylan Guenther nets one for Arizona on the power play, making it 6-1. Logan Cooley tapped in a backdoor pass by Guenther... the final score was 6-2.

- Matthew Tkachuk had 2 goals and an assist

- Paul Maurice became the 2nd in NHL history in games coached (1,813)... passing Barry Trotz for 2nd. Scotty Bowman is in first place with 2,141

- Gustav Forsling hit 100 NHL assists
