Super Mario: From Prodigy to Legend

Graphic: Genevive Oliver There have been great players for the Pittsburgh Penguins, and then there has been Mario Lemieux. From the impossible reach of his stick to his effortless, balletic stride, 'Le Magnifique' wasn't just a force of nature—he was a work of art on ice. His time in Pittsburgh wasn't just about piling up goals and assists; it was an incredible journey of dizzying highs, a battle with a life-threatening illness, and then, a truly triumphant comeback that carved his place as an eternal Penguins legend. His story is one of unrivaled greatness on the ice and a fierce, unwavering loyalty to the city that loved him. The Arrival of Le Magnifique: The Savior of a City The hype around Mario Lemieux started almost before he even got here.    Seattle starts off scoring - Jared McCann scores his 19th of the season. McCann took a feed from Jordan Eberle in the left circle, scoring on a wrist shot, and it got past Arvid Soderblom's glove. Less than three minutes after McCann's goal, Jaden Schwartz extends it to a 2-0 score. Andre Burakovsky's pass hit off Schwartz's shin pad and into the open net. Joey Anderson cut the 2-0 lead to a 2-1 score... he deflected a shot by Seth Jones from the point with 2:40 remaining in the first period.

Only 15 seconds into the middle frame, a goal was credited to Alex Wennberg, making it 3-1. Attempting a breakout pass from the corner, Jones shot the puck but it bounced off Alex Vlasic's skate and went between Soderblom's legs. Wennberg had been the last player to touch the puck before getting into Chicago's net. Brandon Tanev scores a one-timer from a pass by Brian Dumoulin from the right circle. The final score of the second period was 4-1.

Nick Foligno gets one in on the power play, just 39 seconds into the third period. Foligno redirected a pass from Philipp Kurashev into an open net, making it a 4-2 game. Tomas Tatar scores on the breakaway right after Joey Daccord stopped Ryan Donato. Tatar back at it with another goal, his second of the night! He scored with a snap shot from the slot for the 6-2 final.
