Tyler Toffoli hat trick in OT, Devils defeat the Golden Knights 6-5 1/22/24

 






   The Vegas Golden Knights played against the New Jersey Devils at The Rock on Monday, January 22nd. The game could've gone either way, but Tyler Toffoli won it for the Devils in overtime with a hat trick.

   The Golden Knights opened the scoring - Pavel Dorofeyev scored his seventh of the season, being his second goal in two games. Nine minutes later, the Devils tied up the game - Nico Hischier getting his 13th of the season with the help from Timo Meier and Jesper Bratt. Curtis Lazar gives the Devils the lead, 2-1, with 22 seconds remaining in the first period.


   Tyler Toffoli found the back of the net early in the middle frame. Jonathan Marchessault gets his 21st of the season, getting the second of the night for Vegas... Marchessault nets another, his 22nd, tying the game up at 3-3. Putting the Golden Knights in the lead, Chandler Stephenson scored his eighth of the season on a tip-in between Vanecek's pads less than a minute later. Nicolas Roy gets one in, 5-3 for Vegas with 51 seconds left in the second period. Tyler Toffoli nets another, getting the Devils up one before the end of the second frame with 15.8 remaining.


   Vegas and New Jersey all tied up, Curtis Lazar gets his second of the night with his sixth goal of the season, sneaking the puck past Thompson. With no other goals in the third period, the Golden Knights and Devils head into overtime.


   Tyler Toffoli scores his third of the night, recording his sixth career hat trick! The New Jersey Devils win with a 6-5 score - this being a great, big win for the team against the 2023 Stanley Cup Champions.




Tyler Toffoli on the Devils' 6-5 win over Vegas: "We definitely needed to bounce back. We knew that they were one of the top teams in the West. So, it was a chance for us to bounce back and find a way, dig deep - We had to come and play our best. I thought we let it slip a little bit in the second period but stayed with it, and dug deep, found a way."


Luke Hughes on the Devils' win over Vegas: "I think that was a huge two points for us to prove we can kind of come back - Obviously, there are some things we want to clean up in the second period, like giving up five goals... but, I was proud of how this team came out in the third period."


Santeri Hatakka on being back in the NHL and the 6-5 win: "I'm just happy to be here and be able to play - I think in the third period we did a really good job... It's good to win and I'm happy to win. I'm confident about that."




Notes:

- Jesper Bratt finished with a career-high 10 shots

- Santeri Hatakka made his NHL debut

- Tyler Toffoli scored his sixth career hat trick

- This was the 32nd game where the Devils allowed the first goal

- Jonathan Marchessault's two goals in 2:21 are his two fastest with Vegas - seventh-fastest pair in team history.

- Marchessault's two fastest goals of his career came in 26 seconds with the Florida Panthers (3/17/23 vs. ARI)
