Super Mario: From Prodigy to Legend

Graphic: Genevive Oliver There have been great players for the Pittsburgh Penguins, and then there has been Mario Lemieux. From the impossible reach of his stick to his effortless, balletic stride, 'Le Magnifique' wasn't just a force of nature—he was a work of art on ice. The Arrival of Le Magnifique: The Savior of a City The hype around Mario Lemieux started almost before he even got here. In the mid-1980s, the Pittsburgh Penguins were a punchline—a franchise teetering on the brink of irrelevance. Their arena was a ghost town, their roster a collection of misfits. Then, on a fateful day in 1984, the draft lotte...

Giving the Capitals the 1-0 lead early into the first period - Nic Dowd struck his eighth goal of the season. Nicolas Aube-Kubel got the puck from Rasmus Sandin and centered it to Dowd in front for a redirection. Conor Garland scored the first goal for Vancouver and tied the game up 1-1. Garland secured an outlet pass by Noah Juulsen, following a turnover by the Capitals, and beat Darcy Kuemper under his blocker with a wrist shot at the right circle.

Alex Ovechkin put Washington right back into the lead at 12:23 of the second period. Ovechkin's backdoor pass to T.J. Oshie deflected into the net off Nils Aman's skate. Nils Hoglander responded to even the score at 2-2 soon after Ovechkin's goal. Hoglander took a drop pass from Elias Pettersson on a rush, lifting in a backhand over Darcy Kuemper's left shoulder. Both the Canucks and Capitals went through the whole third period with a 2-2 score, heading into overtime to decide the winner.

The Capitals had a chance to win with a 3-2 score in overtime, but Rasmus Sandin hit the post... however, J.T. Miller struck his 23rd goal of the season with 4.8 remaining in overtime. The Vancouver Canucks finished it up with a 3-2 final.

Conor Garland on the Canucks' 3-2 win in overtime and J.T. Miller's game-winning goal: "I think we've been happy with our competition and effort for most of all the games. I think Boston was a slip up, but we were pretty good in Detroit, and good again tonight. It's just we found a way to get one late in another tight game," - "It's a good finish by Mills (J.T. Miller), he's one of the best players in the league, and not many guys get it on and off their stick that quickly. So, it was a great play."

Alex Ovechkin on the Capitals overtime loss: "It was a battle and it was a good game. I think we played solid and unfortunately, we lost the point," - "I hope all of us realize how we to play - Obviously, when you play against the good teams, it's going to cost you."
