Super Mario: From Prodigy to Legend

Graphic: Genevive Oliver There have been great players for the Pittsburgh Penguins, and then there has been Mario Lemieux. From the impossible reach of his stick to his effortless, balletic stride, 'Le Magnifique' wasn't just a force of nature—he was a work of art on ice. His time in Pittsburgh wasn't just about piling up goals and assists; it was an incredible journey of dizzying highs, a battle with a life-threatening illness, and then, a truly triumphant comeback that carved his place as an eternal Penguins legend. His story is one of unrivaled greatness on the ice and a fierce, unwavering loyalty to the city that loved him. The Arrival of Le Magnifique: The Savior of a City The hype around Mario Lemieux started almost before he even got here. In the mid-1980s, the Pittsburgh Penguins were a punchline—a franchise teetering on the brink of irrelevance. Their arena was a ghost town, their roster a collection of misfits. Then, on a fateful day in 1984, the draft lotte...

The first period was completely scoreless 0-0.

Will Cuylle struck the first goal of the game for New York in the second period with his ninth goal of the season. Cuylle scored off a rebound of Kaapo Kakko's shot... Jonny Brodzinski had chipped the puck up the ice, directing Kakko and Cuylle in a 2-on-1. Kakko brought the puck to the right faceoff circle, making a move on Jacob Markstrom, who had made the save... The puck got loose and Cuylle slapped it in to get his first goal in seven games. The Rangers kept their 1-0 lead throughout the remainder of the middle frame.

With only 19 seconds remaining in the final frame, Jimmy Vesey struck his 12th goal of the season with an empty-netter for the 2-0 final. Before Vesey had scored, Igor Shesterkin made an attempt to score a goalie goal by shooting the puck down the ice, unfortunately missing the net wide left for an icing.

Mikael Backlund on the Flames' 2-0 loss in New York: "Mark could play really well for us, kept us in the game in the first period. Pretty tight game after that. They had some looks, and we had some too but gave up too much time we want. They're a highly skilled team... it wasn't our best game, we all know that. It was tight until the end."

Notes:

- Igor Shesterkin got his 12th career shutout... his last shutout was on April 8th, 2023 in a 4-0 win against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Shesterkin moved into the 11th place on the franchise's all-time shutout list... he ranks fourth in shutouts with more than 30 saves (seven), trailing Henrik Lundqvist (28), Gump Worsley (12), and Ed Giacomin (nine).

- Vincent Trocheck had five shots on goal, and also was 12-for-14 on faceoffs

- Jacob Markstrom made 29 saves for Calgary
