Super Mario: From Prodigy to Legend

Graphic: Genevive Oliver There have been great players for the Pittsburgh Penguins, and then there has been Mario Lemieux. From the impossible reach of his stick to his effortless, balletic stride, 'Le Magnifique' wasn't just a force of nature—he was a work of art on ice. His time in Pittsburgh wasn't just about piling up goals and assists; it was an incredible journey of dizzying highs, a battle with a life-threatening illness, and then, a truly triumphant comeback that carved his place as an eternal Penguins legend. His story is one of unrivaled greatness on the ice and a fierce, unwavering loyalty to the city that loved him. The Arrival of Le Magnifique: The Savior of a City The hype around Mario Lemieux started almost before he even got here. In the mid-1980s, the Pittsburgh Penguins were a punchline—a franchise teetering on the brink of irrelevance. Their arena was a ghost town, their roster a collection of misfits. Then, on a fateful day in 1984, the draft lotte...

Opening the scoring early into the first period, Michael Amadio scored his eighth goal of the season to get Vegas in the lead 1-0 on a breakaway. At 15:35, not long after Amadio's goal, William Karlsson scored on a rebound of a shot by Alex Martinez to extend the lead to 2-0. Later into the first frame, Mason Morelli deflected a cross-ice pass on the power play from Alex Pietrangelo and recorded his first NHL goal in his debut.

Keegan Kolesar extended it to 4-0 late into the middle frame, recording his fifth goal of the season. He tapped in a backdoor pass from Alex Martinez.

In the third period, it remained a 4-0 score... the Golden Knights held their lead through the remainder of the game to shutout the San Jose Sharks. This is the eighth time this season the Sharks have been shutout.

Mason Morelli on his debut and his first NHL goal: "It went pretty well. Those guys made it easy in the locker room. A good group of guys and they were very welcoming. It was awesome. It was a special moment and my family was there, so it was cool," - "I didn't see it going in right away... We were hooping and hollering for a little bit. It was a special moment for sure and I got to see the replay with my family too. It's hard to put into words, it's special."

Fun Fact:

I actually have an autographed puck from Mason Morelli when he played for the Hershey Bears. He was one of my favorite Bears players! I still count him as one of my favorite hockey players.

Notes:

- Mason Morelli joined Cody Glass (October 2, 2019) and Vadim Shipachyov (October 25, 2017) as one of the only players to score in their NHL debut for the Vegas Golden Knights.

Morelli also became the third player, age 28 or older, to have a multi-point game in their regular-season debut in the past 30 years. He joins Jaroslav Hlinka (two assists on October 3rd, 2007 with the Colorado Avalanche) and Ilya Byakin (one goal and two assists on November 6th, 1993 with the Edmonton Oilers)

- Alex Martinez recorded three assists... Logan Thompson made 29 saves for Vegas.

- Mackenzie Blackwood made 22 saves for San Jose

- The Golden Knights extended their road point streak to 15 games against the Sharks... dating back to February 8th, 2018.
