Two Wins Tucked Away: Mercer Powers Devils to Victory Ahead of Home Opener

Photo: Andrew MacLean The New Jersey Devils survived a chaotic, late-game flurry in Columbus to secure their second straight victory on Monday night, defeating the Blue Jackets 3-2 to cap off their opening road trip. The star of the dramatic finish was forward Dawson Mercer, who netted a pair of goals—including the decisive empty-net marker—that momentarily gave the Devils a two-goal cushion before the Blue Jackets scored with 20 seconds left to keep the tension high until the final horn. Having collected four points out of a possible six on the road, New Jersey now turns its focus to the familiar roar of the Prudential Center crowd. The team finally heads home to Newark, where they will open their home slate on Thursday night with a pivotal early-season clash against the formidable Florida Panthers.    Mark Scheifele gave Winnipeg the 1-0 lead with his 15th goal of the season. A pass from Jake Guentzel was intercepted by Nikolaj Ehlers in the defensive zone and skated in on a 2-on-1, passing the puck to Scheifele for a one-timer from the left circle. Making it a two-goal lead for the Jets, Nino Niederreiter scored his 13th goal of the season. Niederreiter scored a backhanded shot near the right post after a one-timer by Nate Schmidt caromed back off the end boards.

At 5:52 of the middle frame, Bryan Rust struck his 13th goal of the season. Rust deflected Erik Karlsson's point shot and the puck went over Connor Hellebuyck's shoulder.

The Winnipeg Jets' one-goal lead remained secured throughout the third period... The Jets got the two points with a 2-1 final.

Tristan Jarry on the Penguins' 2-1 loss against the Winnipeg Jets: "They come out hard in this building, so it's something that I think we should have been prepared for. I think we just got caught on our heels a little bit. They were really taking the game to us and I think we just kind of got pushed back a little bit, and we were playing catch up from there - I think we just have to stick with it. The guys did a great job putting pucks at the net. Obviously, their goalie played really well tonight. So, I think when that's happening, we have to keep generating chances, we have to keep going to the net and keep putting pucks on the net, go to the net hard. I think that's how we're going to get rewarded."

Jarry on his game the last couple of days: "It's good. All I want to do is help the team. That's my goal every game is to try and put my best game forward because, at the end of the day, all I want to do is win."
