Two Wins Tucked Away: Mercer Powers Devils to Victory Ahead of Home Opener

Photo: Andrew MacLean The New Jersey Devils survived a chaotic, late-game flurry in Columbus to secure their second straight victory on Monday night, defeating the Blue Jackets 3-2 to cap off their opening road trip. The star of the dramatic finish was forward Dawson Mercer, who netted a pair of goals—including the decisive empty-net marker—that momentarily gave the Devils a two-goal cushion before the Blue Jackets scored with 20 seconds left to keep the tension high until the final horn. Having collected four points out of a possible six on the road, New Jersey now turns its focus to the familiar roar of the Prudential Center crowd. The team finally heads home to Newark, where they will open their home slate on Thursday night with a pivotal early-season clash against the formidable Florida Panthers.    At 9:15 of the first period, Tim Stutzle opened the scoring and gave the Senators a 1-0 lead. Before he beat Andrei Vasilevskiy short side, Stutzle made a move around Emil Martinsen Lilleberg alongside the left boards and then toe-dragged Darren Raddysh near the hash marks. Mathieu Joseph pushed it 2-0 with 6:25 remaining in the first frame. Joseph scored his ninth goal of the season on a 2-on-1, finishing a pass from Claude Giroux.

Mathieu Joseph struck his second of the night and his tenth of the season to make it a three-nothing lead for Ottawa. He skated in on a breakaway, then got the puck past Andrei Vasilevskiy blocker side after he had stolen the puck at the defensive blue line from Steven Stamkos. Getting Tampa Bay on the board, Mitchell Chaffee scored at 3:05 of the middle frame. He scored near the right post after a pass by Nick Perbix from behind the net deflected out front, off Jakob Chychrun's stick.

Vladimir Tarasenko put Ottawa up at 4-1 early into the third period at 15:59. On a 2-on-1, Tarasenko buried the rebound of a shot from Brady Tkachuk into an open net. Just 35 seconds later, Brayden Point nets one to cut it 4-2 and recorded his 28th goal of the season. He scored off a centering pass from Brandon Hagel.

Mitchell Chaffee on Tampa Bay's 4-2 loss: "I think we started how we wanted to, then we had a little slump in the middle and it cost us a little bit. I thought we got back to it later in the game. In this league, you take a little bit of time off and they're going to score a few goals," - "They transitioned very well. It proves that you need to be placing pucks behind them... I thought there were spurts in the game where we needed to get back to that."

Tim Stutzle on Ottawa's win in Tampa Bay: "It was big. We know what they're capable of doing out there, especially that big line. I think we played really well tonight and played on the defensive side... Great win tonight."
