Super Mario: From Prodigy to Legend

Graphic: Genevive Oliver There have been great players for the Pittsburgh Penguins, and then there has been Mario Lemieux. From the impossible reach of his stick to his effortless, balletic stride, 'Le Magnifique' wasn't just a force of nature—he was a work of art on ice. His time in Pittsburgh wasn't just about piling up goals and assists; it was an incredible journey of dizzying highs, a battle with a life-threatening illness, and then, a truly triumphant comeback that carved his place as an eternal Penguins legend. His story is one of unrivaled greatness on the ice and a fierce, unwavering loyalty to the city that loved him. The Arrival of Le Magnifique: The Savior of a City The hype around Mario Lemieux started almost before he even got here. In the mid-1980s, the Pittsburgh Penguins were a punchline—a franchise teetering on the brink of irrelevance. Their arena was a ghost town, their roster a collection of misfits. Then, on a fateful day in 1984, the draft lotte...

At 12:23 of the first period, J.T. Miller opened the scoring to give Vancouver a 1-0 lead. Miller used a screen from Brock Boeser after he intercepted a pass by Jeff Petry in the blue line to score his 24th goal of the season with a wrist shot from the top of the left circle, high-glove side. Not much longer after Miller's wrist shot, Elias Lindholm pushed it 2-0 on the rush. Lindholm scored a wrist shot that had gone through Jake Walman's legs and over Alex Lyon's blocker. Vancouver held their two-goal lead through the rest of the first frame.

Later into the middle frame, Nikita Zadorov struck his second goal of the season to extend the Canucks' lead to 3-0. Zadorov scored on a screened shot coming from just behind the left circle. It had been Zadorov's first goal for Vancouver since being acquired in a trade with the Calgary Flames in November... this was also his first game back from a two-game suspension for a high hit on Lucas Raymond on Saturday in a 4-3 overtime loss in Detroit. J.T. Compher cut it to 3-1 with 5:35 remaining in the second period to get his 100th NHL goal. Compher snapped a quick wrist shot after the puck had deflected across the slot.

Elias Lindholm wrapped it up with his second goal of the game and the second goal in his home debut on a delayed penalty. Elias Pettersson had missed on a 2-on-1 pass to Nils Hoglander, however, he retrieved the puck and sent it cross-ice to Lindholm, who was trailing, and he shot a short-side one-timer from the left hash mark. The Vancouver Canucks won their third game straight, 4-1.

Elias Lindholm on the Canucks' 4-1 win against the Detroit Red Wings: "It felt pretty good. I thought our team played pretty well, a lot of penalty killing... I thought we controlled the game well," - "I thought today we didn't give them too much. Obviously, they have some skilled players there - We stayed pretty compact, tried to keep them on the outside as much as possible."

Notes:

- Thatcher Demko made 15 of his 27 saves in the third period... Demko became the first goalie in the NHL to reach 30 wins this season.

- Dakota Joshua didn't play due to the upper-body injury he sustained on Tuesday against the Chicago Blackhawks... There is currently no timeline.

- Alex Lyon made 17 saves for Detroit

- Robby Fabbri missed a second game straight after the birth of his first child on Wednesday, February 14th. He is expected to return to play against the Calgary Flames on Saturday.
