Super Mario: From Prodigy to Legend

Graphic: Genevive Oliver There have been great players for the Pittsburgh Penguins, and then there has been Mario Lemieux. From the impossible reach of his stick to his effortless, balletic stride, 'Le Magnifique' wasn't just a force of nature—he was a work of art on ice. The Arrival of Le Magnifique: The Savior of a City The hype around Mario Lemieux started almost before he even got here. In the mid-1980s, the Pittsburgh Penguins were a punchline—a franchise teetering on the brink of irrelevance. Their arena was a ghost town, their roster a collection of misfits. Then, on a fateful day in 1984, the draft lotte...

Seth Jones started the scoring to get a 1-0 lead for Chicago at 9:06 of the first period during a 5-on-3 power play. His one-timer from the left point that deflected off Troy Stecher's stick, then under the crossbar. This had been the only goal scored in the opening 20 minutes, and Jones' second goal of the season.

Putting Arizona on the board early to tie the game 1-1 - Nick Bjugstad scored his 14th goal of the season. Nick Foligno put the Blackhawks on top 2-1 at 15:33 of the middle frame on the power play when he redirected a pass from Connor Bedard to the top of the crease. Tying it 2-2 with his 17th of the season, Michael Carcone scored on the rebound of his own shot at the goal line. Carcone has four goals in two games against Chicago. Jason Dickinson gave the Blackhawks a 3-2 lead at 5:50 of the second period... On the power play, he redirected Kevin Korchinski's pass to the slot. With 1:25 left in the second and the fourth power-play goal scored, Philipp Kurashev made it a 4-2 game when he received a cross-ice pass from Foligno for a one-timer.

With 28 seconds remaining in the third frame, Seth Jones struck the empty net for not only his second of the night but also his third of the season for a 5-2 final for Chicago.

Connor Bedard on the win that ended their skid and the power play: "Oh my god, that was a long time, so it's good. I mean, obviously try not to think about it much, but it was a pretty crazy stretch there. So it's nice that it's over," - "I think we were moving it quick, kind of snapping it around a bit... I think just especially with the streak we've been on lately, it's really nice to get a couple of points and have some positivity, and the first happy plane ride in a little bit."

Bedard on Arvid Soderblom: "He played so great. There's been so many games where he's kept us in it and we haven't been able to pull it off for him but tonight he was our best player and it's always good to see him get a win."

Seth Jones on how the team played and their 5-2 victory: "We did a much better job of just playing together as a unit of five out there. Our changes were much better tonight. I thought we got pucks in. We didn't turn a lot of pucks over the neutral zone and feed their transition - they have a lot of skilled players. We just put a north-south game, didn't really mess around with it too much and you saw what happened when we got in the zone. We got some time in there, drew some penalties, and did a good job tonight."

Arvid Soderblom on the Blackhawks' victory: "It's always fun to both win and play good at the same time. It was a fun game to play too, with a lot of shots, and a lot of situations for me. A great game overall."

Notes:

- The power play was their strong suit in this game.

- This is the first time since January 9th, 2018 when the Blackhawks scored four power-play goals in one game. Previously, they scored a pair of power-play goals in a game on two occasions... December 17th vs. Vancouver and February 19th vs. Carolina.

- Tyler Johnson recorded three assists and Connor Bedard recorded two assists. Both Nick Foligno and Jason Dickinson had a goal and an assist.

Bedard has 10 points in 10 games since his return after a fractured jaw he sustained on February 15th (two goals, eight assists).

- Connor Ingram made a total of 27 saves for Arizona.

- Jason Zucker had been held out from this game due to trade-related purposes... Clayton Keller played in his 500th NHL game after he missed the previous four games with an upper-body injury - He had three shots on goal in 21:58 of ice time.

- The Arizona Coyotes won their previous two games, following a 14-game losing streak... They defeated the Blackhawks 8-1 on the 30th of October in their previous meeting.
