Super Mario: From Prodigy to Legend

Graphic: Genevive Oliver There have been great players for the Pittsburgh Penguins, and then there has been Mario Lemieux. From the impossible reach of his stick to his effortless, balletic stride, 'Le Magnifique' wasn't just a force of nature—he was a work of art on ice. His time in Pittsburgh wasn't just about piling up goals and assists; it was an incredible journey of dizzying highs, a battle with a life-threatening illness, and then, a truly triumphant comeback that carved his place as an eternal Penguins legend. His story is one of unrivaled greatness on the ice and a fierce, unwavering loyalty to the city that loved him. The Arrival of Le Magnifique: The Savior of a City The hype around Mario Lemieux started almost before he even got here. In the mid-1980s, the Pittsburgh Penguins were a punchline—a franchise teetering on the brink of irrelevance. Their arena was a ghost town, their roster a collection of misfits. Then, on a fateful day in 1984, the draft lotte...

The Oilers handed the Montreal Canadiens their third straight loss on Tuesday, March 19th at Rogers Place.    Connor McDavid opened the scoring in the first period at 10:40 to give Edmonton a 1-0 lead. It began when Mattias Ekholm poked the puck away from Josh Anderson in Montreal's zone, and McDavid skated down the slot. He went on to tuck it around Sam Montembeault's right pad after holding the puck on his backhand, then cutting back to his forehand to put it past Montembeault.

With this goal, McDavid has 21 points in 12 career home meetings with the Montreal Canadiens.

Scoring his first as an Oiler to push it to 2-0 in the second period at 5:05 - Adam Henrique tapped in Mattias Ekholm's centering pass. This was his first goal in six games since he had been acquired from a three-team trade with the Anaheim Ducks on March 6th.

Only 32 seconds into the third, Nick Suzuki struck his 27th goal of the season to cut it to 2-1. A centering pass by Juraj Slafkovsky deflected into the net off Suzuki's back skate as he had been tied up in the crease with Cody Ceci. Kaiden Guhle tied it 2-2 at 15:17 for his fifth of the season. Guhle skated down the left wing and then sent the puck under Calvin Pickard's glove off a lead pass from Jake Evans. These had been the only two goals through the third period... Montreal and Edmonton headed into overtime.

Leon Draisaitl on the Oilers' overtime win against Montreal: "We stuck with it and obviously got a little fortunate in the overtime there, so we'll take it - We still had our looks today, but teams are obviously hyper-aware when we're out there so it only gets harder and harder, but we stuck with it and eventually got one."

Kaiden Guhle on the Canadiens' 3-2 loss and the way they've been playing lately: "It's frustrating. I mean, I feel like I've been saying this a lot lately, we're playing so well and just can't seem to buy two points. Playing against basically every top team in the league recently, and we're playing them hard... that was another game where I didn't feel like we were out of it for one second. I felt like we deserved a better fate again. So, frustrating, but we're trying to keep our heads high for the time being."

Notes:

- Leon Draisaitl recorded his 61st game-winning goal and ties Wayne Gretzky for third in Edmonton Oilers history. First being Glenn Anderson with 72, and Connor McDavid being second with 68.

- Calvin Pickard has won his 10th game of the season, this being the first time since 2016-17 when he won 15 games for the Colorado Avalanche, that he's reached this mark.

- Sam Montembeault made a total of 29 saves for Montreal.

- Juraj Slafkovsky extended his point streak to five games, having one goal and five assists.

At 1:42 into overtime, Leon Draisaitl scored a one-timer at the bottom of the right face-off circle on the power play off a pass from Connor McDavid.
