Super Mario: From Prodigy to Legend

Graphic: Genevive Oliver There have been great players for the Pittsburgh Penguins, and then there has been Mario Lemieux. From the impossible reach of his stick to his effortless, balletic stride, 'Le Magnifique' wasn't just a force of nature—he was a work of art on ice. Matt Rempe Suspended Four Games for Brutal Elbow on Jonas Siegenthaler 3/11/24

The New Jersey Devils played against the New York Rangers on Monday, March 11th at the Madison Square Garden. The Devils took another loss, their second straight when they played against the Rangers, and this was New York's third straight victory.

During this game, Kurtis MacDermid had asked Matt Rempe to fight, who turned it down. Later after that, Jonas Siegenthaler took a rough elbow to the head by Rempe, who received a major penalty and game misconduct for elbowing. The brutal elbow occurred at 19:25 of the second period when Rempe skated to Siegenthaler after shooting the puck and lifted his arm where he got in contact with Siegenthaler's head.

The NHL's Department of Player Safety announced the day after, March 12th, that Rempe would be suspended for four games without pay. This is Matt Rempe's first suspension, and he will forfeit $17,083.32, based on his average annual salary. The money will be going toward the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.

It was said today, March 13th, that Jonas Siegenthaler will be out for an extended period with a concussion. The Devils recalled Santeri Hatakka to be paired with Brendan Smith, and Nick DeSimone is also returning to the lineup to be paired with Kevin Bahl to combat the injuries they're facing. Today, New Jersey also recalled Tyler Wotherspoon and Max William, who will meet the Devils in Dallas on Thursday, March 14th.

The New York Rangers will be playing against the Carolina Hurricanes, Tampa Bay Lightning, Pittsburgh Penguins, and the New York Islanders without Matt Rempe.
