Super Mario: From Prodigy to Legend

Graphic: Genevive Oliver There have been great players for the Pittsburgh Penguins, and then there has been Mario Lemieux. From the impossible reach of his stick to his effortless, balletic stride, 'Le Magnifique' wasn't just a force of nature—he was a work of art on ice. His time in Pittsburgh wasn't just about piling up goals and assists; it was an incredible journey of dizzying highs, a battle with a life-threatening illness, and then, a truly triumphant comeback that carved his place as an eternal Penguins legend. His story is one of unrivaled greatness on the ice and a fierce, unwavering loyalty to the city that loved him. The Arrival of Le Magnifique: The Savior of a City The hype around Mario Lemieux started almost before he even got here. In the mid-1980s, the Pittsburgh Penguins were a punchline—a franchise teetering on the brink of irrelevance. Their arena was a ghost town, their roster a collection of misfits. Then, on a fateful day in 1984, the draft lotte...

Matt Rempe Scores 1st Playoff Goal in 4-1 Game One Victory 4/21/2024

The Rangers had an amazing start in Round One of the playoffs on Sunday, April 21st at the Madison Square Garden. After a scoreless first period, Matt Rempe not only opened the scoring to spark the Rangers with a 4-1 victory but also scored his first playoff goal to give New York the lead. It had been an exciting goal for Rempe and an amazing way to start off in the second period. Washington and New York meet again on Tuesday back at the Madison Square Garden for Game Two.

"I'll always remember it. It was awesome," Rempe said. "It didn't really kick in and then you hear the crowd. It was a dream come true. It was unreal ... I know my game. I know I can skate well and be physical. I think I can be a real pain to play against down low, protecting pucks and going to the net ... I think I'm built for the playoffs. I think that's where you want to play, and I was happy with how tonight went."

Matt Rempe on his mom being there for the goal and their night before: "It was really special because she got to hear the chants and I got a goal," - "I love her so much. She's my biggest fan. We went out for dinner last night and walked around. She's never really been in New York, so we were just walking around, and it was definitely cool. I bet she was pretty emotional today... She's the best."

"I think any game he's in the lineup, he's affected the game," Vesey said. "I think it's been fun playing with him. He shows up every night for the team and it's great to see him get that goal. It was a big goal in the game, obviously, but the look on his face was pretty cool too."

The goal, the reaction after the goal, and the crowd chanting his name - it truly showed that Matt Rempe belongs on the New York Rangers. He has made a huge impact, and it shows, especially after that big goal that sparked this Game One win for the Rangers.

"That was a big goal to put energy in the building," Laviolette said, after the win. "Maybe because it was him, too, it put a little extra juice in the building."

Peter Laviolette had been asked if he could think of any other player that's come to the building and made an impact like this on the team, and the fan base, and on the city.

"I can't think of a player that's come in and have that impact on a team, on a fan base, and on the city," Laviolette said. "If you watch him and look at him, he just smiles. He's just happy, loves being here, loves to play the game, and he's been great, but I can't think of anybody else to talk about but him."
