Super Mario: From Prodigy to Legend

Graphic: Genevive Oliver There have been great players for the Pittsburgh Penguins, and then there has been Mario Lemieux. From the impossible reach of his stick to his effortless, balletic stride, 'Le Magnifique' wasn't just a force of nature—he was a work of art on ice. His time in Pittsburgh wasn't just about piling up goals and assists; it was an incredible journey of dizzying highs, a battle with a life-threatening illness, and then, a truly triumphant comeback that carved his place as an eternal Penguins legend. His story is one of unrivaled greatness on the ice and a fierce, unwavering loyalty to the city that loved him. The Arrival of Le Magnifique: The Savior of a City The hype around Mario Lemieux started almost before he even got here. In the mid-1980s, the Pittsburgh Penguins were a punchline—a franchise teetering on the brink of irrelevance. Their arena was a ghost town, their roster a collection of misfits. Then, on a fateful day in 1984, the draft lotte...

The Senators played against the Wild in Minnesota at the Xcel Energy Center on Tuesday, April 2nd in hopes of securing their sixth straight win to add to their streak. However, Ottawa took a 3-2 loss to cut their five-game streak short. There had been an effort from both the Senators and the Wild, but Minnesota was able to capitalize and grab a much-needed victory after some unfortunate losses here and there. The Wild will be hosting the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday, and the Senators will host the Florida Panthers to hopefully make a comeback. Vinni Lettieri had scored the go-ahead goal in the third for the 3-2 victory, and Marc-Andre Fleury made a total of 30 saves for Minnesota.

At 7:28 of the first frame, Mason Shaw scored his first goal of the season to give Minnesota a 1-0 lead. He scored off Zach Bogosian's cross-ice pass on the rush. This had been Shaw's 13th game this season after he returned to the lineup on March 2nd... He sustained a season-ending injury last season on April 1st.

Matt Boldy pushed it to 2-0 only 49 seconds into the second for his 26th of the season and his second goal in the past three games. Kirill Kaprizov sent a centering pass to Boldy, who scored on a snap shot in the slot. On the power play at 12:17, Drake Batherson cut it to 2-1 to finally get Ottawa on the board. He scored off a cross-crease pass from Brady Tkachuk when he put a snap shot past Marc-Andre Fleury from below the left face-off circle. These had been the only two goals in the middle frame, and the Wild headed into the third in the lead.

Jakob Chychrun tied it early in the third at 17:18 with a power-play goal. He scored a one-timer at the bottom of the right circle after he'd been found by Drake Batherson with a touch pass after Tim Stutzle passed the puck to Batherson below the goal line. Later on in the final frame, Vinni Lettieri sent a backhanded shot at the top of the crease for the go-ahead goal and the 3-2 final after Mason Shaw had won the puck along the right-side boards in the offensive zone.

Drake Batherson on the game overall, as well as the third goal and carrying momentum moving forward: "I think we outshot them for the most part of the game, and I think they just capitalized on our mistakes and made the most of it," - "It's my fault there on the third goal - I don't know what I was doing. I should have just caught it and thrown it somewhere else... so, that's on me. Move on, stuff like that happens... I think the last little while it's been pretty good and we've been scoring a few so, we'll look to keep that going and hopefully, it goes good for the rest of the year."

Vinni Lattieri on his goal and Mason Shaw's goal: "I knew where I was putting it, but it was very lucky that it got to me in the way it did. I didn't really have too much time, I just kind of tried to beat the goalie quick underneath his blocker," - "It was really awesome to see 'Shawsy' put that one in from what he's gone through and how hard he battles each and every single day. It was a tough road for him and he's back on top. He has a great goal and a big goal for the team tonight."

Notes:

- The Minnesota Wild moved within six points of the Los Angeles Kings for the second wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Western Conference.

- Drake Batherson and Jakob Chychrun both recorded a goal and an assist. Joonas Korpisalo made a total of 17 saves for Ottawa.

- Angus Crookshank had left in the first period after sustaining a lower-body injury and was still being evaluated after the game. No update had been given.

- Marc-Andre Fleury had become the second active goaltender to record at least 50 victories with three different teams (Minnesota Wild, Vegas Golden Knights, and Pittsburgh Penguins). He joined Frederik Andersen (Carolina Hurricanes, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Anaheim Ducks).
