The Oilers hosted the Florida Panthers on Thursday, June 13th, a day after the original date for Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Finals. It has been an unfortunate past few games for Edmonton as they've been losing now the past three in the finals and the Panthers are only one win away from hoisting the Stanley Cup. Warren Foegele, Philip Broberg, and Ryan McLeod scored the three goals for the Oilers. They showed a better effort in this game, possibly giving a little more hope... Could the Oilers make a comeback in Game 4 on Saturday?
Oilers Lineup:
Nugent -Hopkins - McDavid - Hyman
McLeod - Draisaitl - Holloway
Janmark - Henrique - Brown
Foegele - Ryan - Perry
Ekholm - Bouchard
Nurse - Desharnais
Kulak - Broberg
Skinner
Pickard
There had been only one goal scored in the opening 20, which had been a redirection by Sam Reinhart late into the first. He redirected a pass by Gustav Forsling to put the Panthers on the board first.
Warren Foegele struck early in the middle frame to tie it 1-1 at 18:11, scoring on a low glove shot on a breakaway. Putting Florida in front, Vladimir Tarasenko sent a one-timer past Stuart Skinner from between the hash marks off Eetu Luostarinen's pass out of the left corner. This had been after Skinner struggled and failed to handle the puck behind the net. Sam Bennett increased Florida's lead with little time left in the second off a turnover by Darnell Nurse... Aleksander Barkov extended the lead to 4-1 soon after, going top-shelf and scoring off a 2-on-1 with Evan Rodrigues.
With 13:58 to play in the third period, Philip Broberg cut Florida's lead to 4-2 when he shot from the right face-off circle, the shot going in off the elbow of Niko Mikkola. Ryan McLeod gave some hope when he made it 4-3 with a net-front deflection of a shot by Brett Kulak, and then had another chance soon after to tie the game and possibly make it to overtime. McLeod's other chance had been right in front off Connor McDavid's pass, but the shot was on the ice and Sergei Bobrovsky made sure to keep it from going past him with his left pad for a 4-3 final.
Darnell Nurse after the game-three loss on the Florida Panthers and the Oilers power play: "This team has been through so much this year. Throughout the course of the year - throughout the start, middle, end. So, it's no different now. We take it one day at a time and get ready for game four," - "I mean, they play with a lot of instinct out there and are aggressive. I think our power play is finding a lot of chances and when they convert, hopefully, I'll just continue to go in... Our power play is one of the best in the history of the league. I think I'll continue to have the confidence and poise to make plays because the chances have been there."
Connor McDavid on disappointment, game three overall, and moving on to game four: "What's the most disappointing thing is being down three, obviously - I thought we had lots of looks. I thought the game was right there... just a couple of mistakes and they find a way to score," - "We put a lot of pucks there. I thought we did a good job of getting pucks to the net and bodies to the net - We got to get ready for game four and get a win. That's all we can do."
Notes:
- Connor McDavid recorded two assists, and Stuart Skinner made a total of 19 saves for Edmonton.
- The Oilers went 0-for-3 on the power play to fall to 0-for-10 in the series... The Florida Panthers had built their lead in a span of only 6:19 in the second period.
- There has not been a sweep in the Stanley Cup Finals since 1998 - Detroit Red Wings over Washington Capitals.
- Both Aleksander Barkov and Sam Reinhart each had a goal and an assist. Sergei Bobrovsky made a total of 32 saves for the Florida Panthers.
