Point Earned, Streak Secured: Devils Outlast Penguins 2-1 in SO Thriller

Photo: Andrew MacLean This thrilling Metropolitan Division clash was a goaltending masterclass from both ends of the ice. The New Jersey Devils ultimately prevailed in the shootout, defeating the Pittsburgh Penguins 2-1 to secure their second consecutive victory and extend their perfect season-opening home winning streak to seven games. The Devils' win was anchored by netminder Jake Allen, who stopped a stunning 33 of 34 shots through regulation and overtime. Across the ice, the resilient Penguins earned a crucial point, thanks to rookie Arturs Silovs—who turned away 23 of 24 shots while holding the Devils' potent offense in check, an impressive feat for an injury-riddled squad missing six key players. Conor Geekie's Bold First Impression

Conor Geekie earned his spot on Tampa Bay's season-opening roster on Friday, October 11th against the Carolina Hurricanes, the game taking place in Carolina at the Lenovo Center. Geekie was drafted in the first round, 11th overall, by the Arizona Coyotes in the 2022 NHL entry draft. He had been acquired by the Tampa Bay Lightning from the Utah Hockey Club in a blockbuster trade that involved defenseman and two-time Stanley Cup champion, Mikhail Sergachev.

Geekie made a bold and daring first impression during pre-season, making his presence known with his desire to defend, which became extremely clear during a fierce game against the Florida Panthers.

It began when captain Victor Hedman took an open-ice hit from Florida's Josh Davies early in the middle frame. Nikita Kucherov was the first to step in, dropping gloves and jumping onto Davies without a second thought, which resulted in him getting a two-minute penalty for roughing. This response by Kucherov definitely was a signal that the Lightning won't tolerate hits on their captain, however, Conor Geekie's involvement is what really left a mark.

Geekie came off the bench off a line change and decided to send a message to the Florida Panthers.

He ignored the rhythm of the game, zeroed in on Davies, cross-checked him, and forced him into a fight. Geekie did not hesitate and didn't give Josh Davies a chance, instead, he pummelled Davies like a sitting duck. The Lightning rookie obtained 19 penalty minutes, along with a 10-minute misconduct for instigation... Geekie's actions also resulted in a one-game suspension, however, his commitment to stand up and defend his teammates was totally worth it.
