Super Mario: From Prodigy to Legend

Graphic: Genevive Oliver There have been great players for the Pittsburgh Penguins, and then there has been Mario Lemieux. From the impossible reach of his stick to his effortless, balletic stride, 'Le Magnifique' wasn't just a force of nature—he was a work of art on ice. His time in Pittsburgh wasn't just about piling up goals and assists; it was an incredible journey of dizzying highs, a battle with a life-threatening illness, and then, a truly triumphant comeback that carved his place as an eternal Penguins legend. His story is one of unrivaled greatness on the ice and a fierce, unwavering loyalty to the city that loved him. The Arrival of Le Magnifique: The Savior of a City The hype around Mario Lemieux started almost before he even got here. In the mid-1980s, the Pittsburgh Penguins were a punchline—a franchise teetering on the brink of irrelevance. Their arena was a ghost town, their roster a collection of misfits. Conor Geekie's Bold First Impression

Conor Geekie earned his spot on Tampa Bay's season-opening roster on Friday, October 11th against the Carolina Hurricanes, the game taking place in Carolina at the Lenovo Center. Geekie was drafted in the first round, 11th overall, by the Arizona Coyotes in the 2022 NHL entry draft. He had been acquired by the Tampa Bay Lightning from the Utah Hockey Club in a blockbuster trade that involved defenseman and two-time Stanley Cup champion, Mikhail Sergachev.

Geekie made a bold and daring first impression during pre-season, making his presence known with his desire to defend, which became extremely clear during a fierce game against the Florida Panthers.

It began when captain Victor Hedman took an open-ice hit from Florida's Josh Davies early in the middle frame. Nikita Kucherov was the first to step in, dropping gloves and jumping onto Davies without a second thought, which resulted in him getting a two-minute penalty for roughing. This response by Kucherov definitely was a signal that the Lightning won't tolerate hits on their captain, however, Conor Geekie's involvement is what really left a mark.

Geekie came off the bench off a line change and decided to send a message to the Florida Panthers.

He ignored the rhythm of the game, zeroed in on Davies, cross-checked him, and forced him into a fight. Geekie did not hesitate and didn't give Josh Davies a chance, instead, he pummelled Davies like a sitting duck. The Lightning rookie obtained 19 penalty minutes, along with a 10-minute misconduct for instigation... Geekie's actions also resulted in a one-game suspension, however, his commitment to stand up and defend his teammates was totally worth it.
