Dmitri Voronkov opened the scoring at 14:43 of the first frame for his third goal of the season and to put Columbus ahead 1-0. He received the puck from Sean Monahan, and then scored on the breakaway as he had been tripped from behind Brandon Carlo, who was trying to make a defensive play while bundling the puck into the net. With 9:21 on the clock, Mathieu Olivier scored a short-handed goal to make it a 2-0 lead for the Blue Jackets when he cut in and slipped a backhand through Jeremy Swayman's five-hole after he skated through the right side of the offensive zone. James van Riemsdyk pushed it to 3-0 with 31.5 remaining in the opening 20 when he redirected a wrist shot by Zach Werenski from the left circle past Swayman. This had been van Riemsdyk's third goal of the season.
Scoring the Bruins' first power-play goal since November 3rd late in the second - Charlie Coyle cut it to 3-1 with his fourth of the season when he beat Elvis Merzlikins in front with a snap shot after taking a pass from Justin Brazeau.
Justin Danforth extended it to 4-1 at 12:41 of the third frame with the second short-handed goal of the night for the Blue Jackets. Cole Sillinger centered the puck to Danforth for a tap-in at the right post off a short-handed 2-on-1 rush, after Sillinger had picked up the puck when Mason Lohrei mishandled a pass at the blue line. With 5:50 left in regulation, Yegor Chinakov went for a one-timer from the bottom of the left circle when Sean Monahan set him up after a battle in the left corner for a 5-1 final. This had been Chinakov's fifth goal of the season.
Charlie Coyle on having a voice and improving: "I always want to expand my role and be more of a leader. I try to be a guy who leads by example, and that's been a staple for me, but I want to raise my voice more and speak up when needed. We need that, we need that from everyone. It's not just one guy, it's not just the guys wearing the letters - it's those other guys behind them and our younger guys. Everyone has a voice in here. That's the culture, and that's how it's always been. So, I need to do my part, hold myself accountable, be responsible, and be better as a leader, and as a player. We can all be better, we know we can. We're not winning games. Get a look in the mirror first and foremost - that's definitely what I'm doing because I know I can be better."
Brad Marchand on frustration, and where he sees the biggest issues: "We're definitely not happy with the way things are going. We need to be much better in a lot of areas. Mistakes are going to happen in a game, and we're just kind of compounding them. It's not acceptable to continue making the same mistakes and doing the same things over and over... We need to be a lot better," - "I think it starts with our compete level, I think it always starts with compete level first and foremost. In this league, you have to have the highest compete every night if you want to be a good team. We have it through periods of the game. We have it at times and we do really good, then we get these other moments of the game where we think we're a skilled team and we want to play through the middle of the ice, and that's not us. We have to understand what our identity is and play to that, and we have yet to do that really for a full 60 in a game."
Jeremy Swayman on where his game is at, why he thinks it hasn't been at the level he wants, mindset, and missing training camp: "I think it could only go up from here... I think there are multiple reasons - there are habits that I could be better at, and there are experiences that I could use to my advantage. Tough times don't last, tough people do. So, that's my mindset. Tomorrow is a new day, and I'm going to win it," - "I think I've had enough time now to adapt and get back to things. I think the biggest thing that I lost out on was this group, and I'm really trying to engulf just being in a room again, being a leader, and I want my play to speak for that. So, I need to step up and that's exactly what I'm going to do."
