The puck officially dropped on the 2025-2026 NHL season in Raleigh tonight, but the New Jersey Devils' hopes for an opening night victory quickly ran into a Carolina storm. A packed PNC Arena saw the Hurricanes use a potent offensive attack and a steady performance in net to hand the visiting Devils a 6-3 loss in the season opener for both clubs. While New Jersey showed flashes of skill and fight, Carolina's depth ultimately proved too much, setting an early, decisive tone for their home campaign.

New Jersey Devils Lineup:

Dadonov - Hughes - Bratt
Meier - Hischier - Mercer
Palat - Glass - Brown
Cotter - Glendening - Gritsyuk

Hughes - Pesce
Siegenthaler - Hamilton
Dillon - Nemec

Carolina Hurricanes Lineup:

Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis
Svechnikov - Stankoven - Blake
Martinook - Staal - Carrier
Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson

Slavin - Walker
Miller - Chatfield
Nikishin - Gostisbehere

Carolina struck first when Taylor Hall found the back of the Devils' net early in the first period at 15:54 right off the face-off. Alexander Nikishin picked up the puck in the left corner, sending a backhand pass to Shayne Gostisbehere, who sent it across to Hall, who was near the right hash marks and fired it past Jacob Markstrom to put the Hurricanes ahead 1-0.

Dougie Hamilton cut to the backhand before scoring from the left hash marks to tie it up 1-1 in the middle frame with 11:45 on the clock when he took a pass from Jesper Bratt, who received the puck from Jack Hughes as he drove up through the neutral zone before handing it off to Hamilton. In his Hurricanes debut, K'Andre Miller put Carolina on top 2-1, not long after New Jersey tied it up at 10:37 of the second. He took a pass from William Carrier out of the corner, scoring on a shot that appeared to deflect off Nico Hischier and right past Markstrom. Cody Glass knotted it back up 2-2 on a 2-on-1 with Connor Brown before firing a wrister past Frederik Andersen from the left circle.

Putting home his second of the night with 9:39 on the clock in the third period, Miller scored on the power play after taking a pass from Sebastian Aho, who received it from Jackson Blake along the right wall for Miller to go on to score on a slap shot from above the left circle. Jesper Bratt tied it 3-3 when a centering pass by Brett Pesce deflected off Jaccob Slavin and across the slot to Bratt, who put it past Andersen from the left side at 8:22. Seth Jarvis scored the go-ahead goal in front to give the lead back to Carolina 4-3 late when Gostisbehere, from the left side, sent the puck over to Aho, who shot from the right circle and Jarvis redirected the centering pass. Jarvis then added an empty-net goal with 55 seconds on the clock to make it 5-3, and Eric Robinson went for the 6-3 final with 13 seconds left.
